Sunday Night Jam, via Puerto Rico: Andrea Cruz, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert [VIDEO]

March 27, 2019 | Felix Contreras — Andrea Cruz brought a little bit of Puerto Rico with her when she took her place behind the Tiny Desk. It was present by way of the flag she hung up on the shelves, as well as in the lyrics of the songs and the style of music she expresses herself with.

It’s important to note that the instrumentation of the band that traveled with her (keyboard, two percussionists and trombone) hardly fits what you’d expect music from the island to sound like these days. But Cruz is part of a movement in Puerto Rico that emphasizes largely acoustic instruments and a folk-based approach to interpreting life before and after the hurricane of 2017. It’s a bold creative statement in a land of reggaeton and salsa.

Cruz drew on songs from her first album, 2017’s Tejido de Laurel. The emotion of the lyrics of the first song, “No Toquemos Tierra,” is evident in her angelic voice as she makes a declaration of love for the earth as a metaphor for a lover. The beauty of the song is in her poetic lyrics set to a melody that defies language.

I was very pleased to see that Cruz’s live performance is very much like the stripped-down sound on her album and the handful of singles she’s released. In fact, I would say her music is a perfect soundtrack to a growing, back-to-nature movement in Puerto Rico that encourages local farming and a careful stewardship of the environment. “Santas Flores” also digs deep into that philosophy as she sings about “holy flowers.”

Andrea Cruz spent her time talking to the audience in a mix of English and Spanish and there was no mistaking the intense feeling behind her song about femicide on the island in the song, “Canción de Amargura.” The sound of the entire ensemble was elevated by Cruz’s plaintive vocals at the end.

Andrea Cruz is a bright new voice coming from an island with a deep history of revered vocalists and, as you can see, she more than holds her own.

Beto went there…

Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke on Sunday described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “racist” whose outreach to far-right interests as he seeks to hang onto political power has seriously damaged the chances of peace in the Middle East.

Speaking at a town hall here at the University of Iowa, the former Texas congressman denounced Netanyahu’s pledge Saturday that he would annex Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank if he wins another term in Tuesday’sIsraeli general election. Netanyahu’s proposed annexation, O’Rourke said, “will make peace in the long term impossible.”

In response to a voter’s question about his policy toward Israel and Palestinian rights, O’Rourke reiterated his support for a two-state solution and accused Netanyahu of having “joined forces with far-right parties who are inherently racist in their speech and the way that they want to treat their fellow human beings in that part of the world.”

He then went further, telling reporters in a gaggle afterward that Netanyahu is a “racist.”

Beto is merely speaking the truth. Netanyahu will do or say anything to retain power, no matter how many his actions harm.

Probably because Bibi reckons he’s looking at jail time the instant he’s out of power.

The same is true of Trump.

The big difference is that, unless the Constitution is abrogated, Trump cannot serve past 2024; there is no limit on the number of terms that an Israeli prime minister can serve.

Speaking of twitter, the lottery (MegaMillions, PowerBall) streams have for a few weeks been overwhelmed by oodles of suspicious tweets hyping a suspicious website (matchbillions).

The latter website won’t let me access it while I’m using a VPN. All the twitter accounts tweeting the link are cryptocurrency bots.

No matter how much I report these tweets, Twitter refuses to stop them.

The website is the usual bitcoin type of website that attempts to gather in unaware lottery-interested people on twitter to a website that sells its own crypto-idiocy.

The only thing the UK has going for it right now is that the EU doesn’t want them to crash out either, because it would be bad for their economies as well. I suspect that they are going to get yet another extension, but I bet they end up having to participate in the EU elections.

I also suspect this whole fiasco will end up consigning the Tories to the political wilderness for a decade or so; they’ve bungled this badly, from beginning to end.

Don’t let him fool you. First, whether he knows it or not, he’s running to re-elect Trump. Second, “fiscal responsibility” is the mantra of people who want to shred the social safety net, and definitely don’t want to do anything additional to help middle and low income Americans.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

What did we learn this weekend? Trump’s the most vile person to inhabit the WH ever? He fired/resigned DHS Nielsen because she wasn’t abhorrent enough and that’s plenty bad given that she lied repeatedly over DHS policy of separating children from their parents and wanted to deny reunification of those children with their parents for years.

We learned that the media is still playing their 2016 games about the candidates and gives short shrift to the women in the race.

We learned that Buttegieg is a Democrat running a city from a red state and no one else has that experience… except Castro (who runs a bigger city in a bigger red state).

We learned that the media is as mendacious as ever.

We learned that Trump continues to dredge up the worst you can imagine.

Given that so many people have turned down working with Trump, kinda makes you wonder what would possess others to not turn him down. Were they so blinded by Trump worship or their own naked ambition to not see the inevitable conclusion to their service? Trump’s only loyalty is to himself, and he requires everyone around him to be only loyal to him. That is not the kind of boss any sane person would want.

I guess I answered my own question there.

Nielsen is a special kind of evil. I’m a little surprised she finally found some ethics buried deep in her psyche and resisted Trump’s efforts to break the law. Betsy DeVos, meanwhile, is a stupid kind of evil. She will destroy her department not from malice but from sheer incompetence and delusional thinking.

Reading her tweet makes me wonder why pro-lifers on the one hand thank their God for giving them life, but at the same time thank their God for welcoming them into heaven when they die — that is, letting them die. If a baby is born, and dies soon after, they say, “He/she’s with God now” or “He/she’s in a better place.” But if a mother chooses not to carry a fetus to term, she’s a murderer who deprived the fetus of life, even if that life be very short or full of misery.

I mean, I’m glad that Soojin is alive. She’s probably a very nice person. Generally speaking, being alive has many advantages over being dead. But using your own life to beat other people over the head about their own life choices just seems, well, unChristian.

This is really killing me, because I thought the comics were cute and, in a way, insightful. But I can’t support someone who thinks it’s perfectly OK to force a woman to continue a pregnancy when she has decided not to. I mean, there’s a *reason* why women used knitting needles, coat hangers and other sharp instruments in attempts to self-abort. They didn’t want to be pregnant. It wasn’t joyous, it was causing anguish. And these people would prolong the anguish because they give more rights to a zygote/embryo/fetus than they do to a living, breathing woman.

This just popped up in my emails. Trump has stepped on another rake.

In unprecedented move for the U.S., Trump administration declares elite Iranian military unit a terrorist organization

By Washington Post Staff April 8 at 10:28 AM
The move was announced Monday as the Trump administration looks for ways to increase economic and political pressure on the Islamic regime in Tehran.

The designation of the Revolutionary Guards Corps marks the first time Washington has branded a foreign military a terrorist group. While the designation will have little immediate impact, it runs counter to warnings from U.S. military and intelligence officials that other nations could use the designation as a precedent against U.S. action abroad.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Barely three months into her second turn in charge, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has already mapped out a plan to overwhelm Republicans in the 2020 elections.

“I’m going to have our races won by this November,” the California Democrat said.

Yes, the House speaker predicted that she will have locked down the majority a full year ahead of schedule, leaving the political battlefield to what she considers an intense presidential race all the way up to November 2020.

She considers her biggest mistake during her first stint as speaker was allowing Republicans to relentlessly attack her and her policy achievements such as the Affordable Care Act without any coordinated pushback. Democrats lost a staggering 63 seats and the majority in the 2010 midterms, leaving Pelosi’s public image battered for years to come.

“I was in this office, but I didn’t — I didn’t — relish being speaker. I relished the power of legislative accomplishments,” she said. “I didn’t see a public role.”

That last part was the big criticism of Obama, that he didn’t sell his and the Democrats accomplishments, being satisfied with just achieving them. It’s what I worry about with some of the best policy people in our Democratic campaign. The president has to be part salesperson.

USA Today:

Nancy Pelosi doesn’t care what you think of her. The only woman to become speaker of the House - not once, but twice - is plowing forward with her agenda, despite demands from her left flank to act more boldly and her right flank to move with caution,” USA Today reports.

“It appears to be working, so far. Pelosi is quick to point out she has never lost a major vote on the House floor. She has gotten unanimous or near-unanimous Democratic support this year on most major House legislation - although the measures are largely messaging vehicles since they stand little chance of passing the GOP-controlled Senate.”

If so, he’s going to be disappointed: Kimberly Sue Endicott has been freed already, and was taken back to Kampala (and will probably be on her way home soon). There are still a couple of inconsistencies in the news reports: mainly whether Endicott’s release was done after a ransom was paid or not; and the level of “military assistance” involved by US and/or Ugandan forces. But the affair is over for now - and seemingly without violence or bloodshed. Which I’m sure will disappoint somebody or other in the Admin….

OK: digging a little deeper into the story - and considering the source - Fox News’ take on Trump’s tweet is that he was merely urging Ugandan authorities to deal with the kidnappers* so future tourists will feel safe going there. But as usual with our semi-literate Chief Executive, his tweet didn’t convey that meaning.

*Fat chance: apparently, the gunmen were based across the border in the DRC. Maybe he should offer Uganda aid to build a wall……

That should always be a matter of intense public interest since the officials are supposed to be serving the public and not themselves.

Unfortunately the usual method for that was intense media pressure and political pressure within the political system in general and one’s own party. These mechanisms seem to be very broken right now.

If the initial rollout of the ACA had been straightforward, the Democrats might have been able to claim it as a success but the many missteps, which usually accompany major software releases, did deter them and work against them. Obama should have been promoting it on a daily basis but that’s never been his strength. However, the Dems have learned their lesson (hopefully) and should be denouncing the Republicans for their health care fail

He said if MPs voted against Mrs May she would be placed under immense pressure to quit. […]

Calvin himself was deeply disturbed by the implications of predestination but didn’t see a way out of it once he’d accepted that interpretation. He simply tried to ignore it rather than accept that he was interpreting God’s will incorrectly (and that instead, all are inherently saved). But it was John Knox who really fell in love with that heresy and made it the cornerstone of what we call Calvinism today.

The irony, of course, is that all those supposed innocents if “babies” in the womb are already predestined to be aborted because they’re damned anyway.

I’ll stick to my personal belief that ensoulment happens at the first breath (ala Genesis 2:7). Before breath begins we are as we are after breath ends: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

re: #153 jaunte

It’s all a way to avoid accountability and further entrench Executive power solely in the orange asshole’s hands, directly. That’s why he’s demanding resignations and then not setting forth noms. He gets to directly choose the ‘acting’ directors in the interim with minimal Congressional input, and gets to demand all he wants from them because their continued employment depends on his deviant whims.

It’s his path to becoming a true, unabashed and unquestioned Emperor.
